When Bioshock came out it was an instant hit. That's a prime example of how to build an FPS and be successful in a market dominated by something with the words "Duty", "Of", and "Call" in the title. (Not necessarily in that order)But then there are games that hit that market and don't make it, because they are not original i.e. anything dealing with World War II that's not a Call of Duty or alternate history. One title comes to mind. Turning point: Fall of liberty, which tried both styles as Call of Duty and Bioshock. Alternate history and World War II. More specficially if Germany won the war and took over America. This game had an interesting concept, but good or bad it was a copied idea; World War II.
Bioshock was an original idea in a market riddled with clones for FPSs as a market. But what went wrong with Bioshock 2? I can answer that, a few issues of the same engine and nearly the same graphics. Plus the story; it was a bit on the weak side. The return to Rapture was a good idea, even someone else running it, taking over the splicers as citizens or taking over the whole world eventually; whatever her plan, it was a cool concept. But its the little things that hurt it, like you playing as a Big Daddy prototype that is better than the mass produced ones in every way. Then the Big Sister attacking you randomly, and usually after your resources are exhausted which leads to a brutal death in my case and bouncing the controller off your forehead in frustration. I beat the first Bioshock without dying once. I lost count on 2 after 12 times of frustrated disappointment. Some of those lives were lost in one Big Sister fight when I was actually prepared and set traps and she still messed me up!
Now on to Call of Duty. I loved World at War, but I don't know what happened with Modern Warfare 2. They tried the alternate history....I think, unless a war recently broke loose in D.C. when I wasn't looking. Call of Duty was always the most realistic war game I've ever had the privilege of playing. Why do as my Dad said and make it Haloish? (Meaning it got unrealistic in turn being more sci-fi) I played some of Modern Warfare 2 and watched Dad beat it. I grew a bit bored after I was standing on top of I think a bank, and gunning down enemies coming from a Taco-Bell lookalike. I understand that they want this to feel a bit Urban, but last I checked, this was S.W.A.T.'s job, not the military. I'm kinda burnt out on WWII games like everyone, but if they are going to be about alternate history, I'd prefer a realistic WWII game any day, or I'll put in Halo 3 and enjoy the fake action with an alternate future or world in Gears of War. Modern Warfare 2 felt to me like an attempt on popular games like Halo and Gears, instead of, as they say: "Using what brought you to the dance"
